Rioja wine, stronger leader in Spain’s domestic market and in exports

Sales of D.O.Ca. Rioja wine had a significant growth in 2021 and a report from Nielsen IQ, the most important company measuring audiences and data analysis, certified that Rioja’s growth in the Spanish market was superior to the general growth of Spanish wines. This allowed Rioja to increase its market share in Spain, reaching 27.3% of the total volume of wines with Designation of Origin sold in the market. Rioja doubles the market share of the second D.O. in terms of volume.

In terms of value, Rioja’s position is even stronger, with a market share of almost one third: 32.2%.

In the international markets, Rioja has an impressive market share of 34.7% (by volume) and 41.5% (by value) of the total exports of Spanish wines with Designation of Origin.

These figures from 2021 certify the continuation of the trend started in the middle of the pandemic in 2020, when Rioja behaved much better than most European countries and regions.
