DOCa Rioja excels in two international competitions

The quality of Rioja’s wines continues to be successful and recognized: in the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards 2024 (DWWA), which have just been announced, Rioja was awarded the most prizes in Spain with 477 wines, accounting for about a quarter of the total number of prizes awarded to Spanish wines.

The Decanter event, which has become one of the most complete and prestigious tasting competitions in the world thanks to its extensive tastings and high standards of judging, awarded medals and honors in various categories to many of this year’s award-winning wines.

Rioja was the Spanish region that received the most recognition in all categories: two of its wines were awarded the Best in Show, the most valuable accolade in the competition, which is awarded to only 50 wines worldwide. In addition, Rioja received 4 Platinum, 20 Gold, 230 Silver and 221 Bronze awards.

The Decanter jury is made up of 243 top experts from 33 countries, including Master Sommeliers and Masters of Wine, who taste more than 18,000 wine samples from 57 countries blind. According to Decanter, winning a DWWA award is a great victory, meaning that “the wines have been evaluated by top experts in blind tastings, objectively reflecting good, very good and excellent wines”.

The results of the prestigious Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (CMB) were also recently announced, and Rioja won 81 medals, once again becoming the most awarded Spanish wine region to date. With 41 gold and 40 silver medals, Rioja accounted for almost a quarter of the total number of awards won by the 50 Spanish wine regions that participated in the competition.
