Rioja Consolidates Its Leadership in Spanish Wine Exports

Exports of Rioja wine with a qualified designation of origin (DOCa) accounted for 40.8% of the total value of Spanish wine exports with designation of origin between July 2023 and June 2024, according to data from the State Tax Administration Agency (AEAT) analyzed by the Spanish Wine Market Observatory (OeMv). During this period, foreign sales of Rioja wine reached 496.4 million euros, out of a total of 1,216.7 million euros generated by all Spanish wine exports with Designation of Origin Protection (DOP).

In terms of volume, Rioja also increased its share, representing 37.3% of the total, which translates to 91.3 million liters exported out of the 245 million liters of wine with designation of origin exported in general. These figures reflect a growth of DOCa Rioja compared to the previous period (July 2022 to June 2023), when its share in exports was 40.6% in terms of value and 35.6% in volume. This increase in Rioja’s participation in both indicators shows a more favorable evolution compared to other protected designations of origin (DOP) in Spain.

One of the reasons for the higher value share of Rioja wines compared to volume is their average export price, which stands at 5.43 euros per liter. This price is higher than the average export price of Spanish wines with designation of origin, whose average value is 4.69 euros per liter. This highlights that Rioja wines are not only exported in large quantities but also position themselves in the international market with greater added value.

These results confirm the importance of the DOCa Rioja winegrowing sector in the Spanish wine economy, especially in exports. The growth in both value and volume compared to other DOP wines indicates that these wines continue to gain ground and consolidate their prestige at the international level. The figures for the year to June 2024 reflect a trend of improvement that is not only sustained but has also been outperforming the performance of other designations in the country.
