Reaching one hundred years is no small feat, but becoming the benchmark for quality Spanish wine both domestically and internationally is even more challenging. In recognition of this achievement, the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV) awarded DOCa Rioja, acknowledging its role as “a standard of quality and an ambassador of Spanish wine excellence worldwide for the past century.” This is the first time the Spanish wine industry has presented such an award to a designated wine region.
FEV stated that the award recognizes DOCa Rioja’s contribution to “defending the wine industry and its culture.” Rioja is the first origin denomination in Spain to celebrate a centenary, undoubtedly one of the flagship regions of Spanish wine.
The President of D.O.Ca. Rioja Regulatory Board, Mr. Fernando Ezquerro expressed his gratitude to FEV: “This recognition is the result of our collective effort. I accept this award on behalf of 13,000 grape growers and over 500 wineries, who have passed down the legacy of Rioja wine, enhancing its quality and reputation over generations. This is not just about celebrating a century of origin designation, but also about honoring a spirit of innovation and leadership, which is deeply rooted in Rioja’s DNA. I believe that the next significant decision in the wine industry will be led by Rioja.”
