Rioja Celebrates its 100th Anniversary

In 2025, Rioja welcomes the 100th anniversary of becoming Spain’s first Designation of Origin (DO) wine region. This significant milestone marks Rioja’s outstanding achievements in winemaking and quality control. Since obtaining its legal appellation status in 1925, Rioja has been committed to enhancing the quality and diversity of its wines, becoming a benchmark for global wine regions.

Rioja is not only renowned for its exceptional wine quality but also attracts numerous visitors due to its rich historical and cultural heritage. In 2024, Rioja achieved remarkable success in the World’s Best Vineyards rankings, with Bodegas De Los Herederos Del Marqués De Riscal being rated first, and four other wineries making it to the top 50 list.

Over the past 10-15 years, wine tourism in Rioja has experienced significant growth, becoming a more attractive alternative to traditional tourism. Currently, about 202 wineries in Rioja are open to the public for tourism visit. Rioja has witnessed a continuous influx of visitors from different regions and countries, and the wineries have accordingly adjusted their wine tourism products to provide travel experiences that meet the needs of visitors.

The 100th anniversary of Rioja is not only a celebration of the past but also a look forward to the future. The region will continue to be dedicated to innovation and sustainable development, maintaining its leading position in the global wine market.
