Rioja Ripening Report No. 3 – Proper Evolution of Sugar Levels

The 3rd Ripening Bulletin issued by the Rioja Control Board for the 2025 harvest season shows that, overall, the probable alcohol degree is evolving within normal parameters.

In Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, berry weight is progressing normally, at average levels or slightly above. In Rioja Oriental, however, berry weight remains below average, with signs of a certain slowdown in week-to-week evolution.

According to the analysis carried out at the beginning of September, acidity and pH values are within the normal range, though their evolution requires close monitoring. At the same time, phenolic ripening parameters have slowed, which the Control Board’s technical services attribute to the rainfall on August 31.

In general, the vineyards show a good vegetative and sanitary state. Nevertheless, in plots affected by the hailstorm of August 31, grape development must be monitored carefully and continuously, checking the condition of damaged berries. In those vineyards where the canopy has been severely affected, an early harvest will be necessary.
