Rioja Ripening Report (1)

In line with reporting tradition, this first ripening bulletin publishes data exclusively from the Rioja Oriental area.

According to the analyses carried out on August 18, the sanitary and vegetative condition of the vineyards in Rioja Oriental is good. However, the report recommends paying close attention to the evolution of the leaf canopy in those plots most affected by the recent heatwave.

The report indicates that sugar ripening parameters show an advance compared to previous years, as a result of the intense weather conditions experienced in recent weeks. Overall, the average berry weight is below that recorded in the last growing season. Special attention should be given to acidity and pH, which at this stage display correct initial values.

Two particular incidences were noted in this monitoring: sample no. 27 was affected by hail, and sample no. 28 underwent green harvesting.

These findings form the basis of the first Ripening Report published by the Regulatory Council in 2025. In the coming weeks, the Council will extend ripening monitoring to the whole Denomination, providing winegrowers with scientific references to determine the optimal harvest date for each area and thus maximize the quality of the grapes and the wines produced.
