World’s Best Vineyards has revealed the top 50 wine destinations for 2024, with Rioja claiming two spots in the top five as well as being the most awarded region in the Top 50 list. Rioja’s Bodegas De Los Herederos Del Marqués De Riscal took the top spot, with a further four wineries from Rioja – Bodegas Ysios, Bodegas Muga, Marqués de Murrieta Estates & Wines and Bodegas Vivanco – all earning a place on the coveted list.
World’s Best Vineyards is an annual ranking that celebrates exceptional wineries globally, showcasing those that excel in wine quality, visitor experience, and unique settings. The list features vineyards that not only produce outstanding wines but also offer memorable experiences, from guided tastings and educational tours to stunning landscapes and remarkable architecture. Sustainability and innovation are also key, with many top-ranked vineyards recognised for eco-friendly practices.
This year’s winner, Bodegas De Los Herederos Del Marqués De Riscal, established in 1858, is acclaimed not only for its amazing wines but also its iconic architecture. Visitors can stay in the luxurious hotel (pictured above), designed by Frank Gehry, overlooking the vines and enjoy a sublime wine paired dinner at the internationally renowned restaurant featuring exquisite local cuisine.
Bodegas Ysios, known for its high-quality wines and avant-garde architecture, came in 4th place and was also awarded Highest Climber, having risen 67 places from last year. In the past year, Bodegas Ysios has enhanced its visitor offering to provide a more immersive experience in Rioja Alavesa’s scenic vineyards. New options include the exclusive Winecar Tour, where guests tour the vineyards by electric vehicle, sampling Ysios wines and curated appetisers along the way.
Bodega Muga also made the top 50 list, coming in 23rd place thanks to its offering of fun and educational activities including guided tours of its historic oak barrel cooperage, a Segway tour combining an exploration of its stunning vineyard plots with an overview of how the unique terroir influences the wines, as well as the recent addition of a hot air balloon experience, which takes guests on a sunrise flight over the vineyards.
In 30th place was Marqués de Murrieta Estates & Wines, whose exclusive offering includes tours of its historic estate, Castillo de Ygay, dating back to 1852. The estate has recently expanded with 50,000 square metres of new parks and gardens, adding to its appeal for those seeking a blend of history, innovation, and natural beauty in one visit.
Bodegas Vivanco came in 31st, with a key attraction being the world-renowned Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture where art, history, and winemaking come together. The winery also offers themed events such as “Stars Among Vineyards,” a unique stargazing experience, and “The Grape Harvest Festival,” which immerses guests in the winemaking process.
There was further success for Rioja in the 51-100 list, with La Rioja Alta coming 62nd in the ranking, thanks to its offering of exclusive tastings, in-depth tours of its century-old cellars, and insights into traditional winemaking techniques, all within the charming setting of Haro’s historic wine district.
