2020: A VERY GOOD VINTAGE FOR RIOJA

The Regulatory Council of DOCa Rioja granted the rating of ‘VERY GOOD’ to the 2020 vintage.

This assessment is the conclusion of a rigorous and transparent process of analysis of all the wines made in the Denomination, for which the Council’s technicians collected between November 2020 and February 2021 about 4,800 samples from the fermentation tanks of the wineries. The samples were subjected to physical-chemical analysis and also tasted by a panel of 150 professionals who assessed their organoleptic characteristics.

200 harvest technicians and assistants of the Regulatory Council ensured compliance with the strict regulations of the Denomination with the utmost professionalism and under demanding anti-covid protocols.

Regarding the elaborated wines, the red wines stand out for their aromatic clarity and a great fruity definition. They provide a roundness in the mouth that is a sign of the very good phenolic maturity, as well as a perfect harmony with the alcoholic content, which is more moderate than in the previous vintage.

The rosés are marked by a generalization of lighter, pinkish shades, and with a greater maturation this year in terms of their aromatic range. In white wines, a high intensity of aromas, a very good acidity and a very positive evolution of quality stand out; The level of precision with which the elaborations are being carried out has been particularly surprising, and it allows us to speak of a proper and unique identification of the Rioja whites.

The president of the Regulatory Council, Fernando Salamero, said that “despite 2020 having been a very complicated year, we have once again been able to bring to the market a product that meets the highest quality standards.”
